Dryer Vent Cleaning Safety Tips

Dryer vent fires are the leading cause of most home fires in the United States. Dryer vents are usually neglected but little do most people know that the lint trap on a dryer (even that of a new one), is highly flammable. This can set the dryer under fire, which could spread through the vent system and throughout your home. When a dryer does its job of removing around half pound of water, the lint trap absorbs the lint, forcing the air through the dryer exhaust system. In a matter of time, this excess lint builds up, restricting the airflow which makes it more difficult for your dryer to function properly. Excess lint buildup can cause your dryer to overheat and eventually lead to the occurrence of fire.

Dryer Safety and Inspection Tips

1. See to it that your lint trap does not have rips by cleaning it after using it. A wet lint means that you need to clean your dryer vents by lightly scrubbing it at least once a week using light dish washing soap.

2. While the dryer is working, inspect the exterior vent hood on the side of your home to see whether or not the flaps are moving or the airflow is freely flowing. If not, it is the right time to inspect and clean the dryer exhaust system.

3. Check the dryer for lint on the floor. If you spot any, it only means that the dryer exhaust system needs to be cleaned.

4. Another sign that your dryer exhaust system is in poor condition is when your clothes are taking more than one cycle to dry. This means that your dryer needs to be cleaned immediately.

5. Drying clothes or rags that have been drenched with any flammables is a big no-no since it can cause your dryer to explode.
